Housing prisoners during the 1800s, there are many stories to be told in Beaumaris Gaol. We’ll never know all of them but we do know some, many which are told in the self-guided tour around the gaol.
This National Trust property enjoys an enviable position on the banks of the Menai Straits with stunning views across to Snowdonia. As well as enjoying the house and gardens, there are some fantastic events planned for the summer at Plas Newydd, for children and adults alike.
A property looked after by CADW, the history of Denbigh Castle is brought back to life with informative boards as well as soundtracks evoking the sounds and atmosphere of the castle being under attack in the latter half of the 13th century. Once you’ve explored the castle, enjoy the town in which it sits.
This defence fort was different to its later cousins as it was made entirely from wood and other material, but not stone. It has a bailey and moat which is why some people also know it as Bailey Hill. Mold Castle, however, is a great place to visit with plenty of other areas of interest close by.
You’ll find this piece of heaven just outside of Holyhead – that is, if you love chocolate and gin, along with an interesting hour or two exploring this wonderful windmill and its colourful past. The tour guides are known for their interesting and colourful style. With the windmill and roundhouse explored, you can enjoy well-earned refreshments in the on-site cafe.
This magnificent headland is well worth a visit up its steep road and pathways (why not take the tram up and the cable car down?) and once you have explored the disused copper mines and the pathways across the Orme, enjoy some time in the Summit Complex. And when you’re refreshed, enjoy a round of crazy golf.
Back over on the island, you’ll be following in the footsteps of LLywelyn the Great by visiting the ancient ruins of Llys Rhosyr close to Llanfair PG. Llys means ‘court’ so this could have been the place where the Prince of Wales collected taxes and rallied troops.
Another CADW looked-after site, the Segontium Roman Fort is just outside the town of Caernarfon. After a visit to the castle, why not step further back in time and learn about the Romans in North Wales, as well as how they lived and worked whilst they were here.
